Work boots are made to be durable and rugged. They protect us from the elements and safeguard our feet from workplace hazards. In addition, they help keep our feet comfortable, even after a long day’s work. For these reasons, investing in quality work boots is critical.

Finding the right size and fit for your work boots is absolutely worth it.

What makes for a dependable pair of work boots?

There are several features to keep an eye out for when choosing work boots. To prevent foot aches and problems, we recommend finding a pair of boots with the following features.

  1. They should only bend at the point where your toes meet your foot.
  2. They should not bend or twist excessively so that your ankles will be supported.
  3. A heel counter at the rear for rear foot stability.
  4. A shock-absorbing midsole.
  5. Laces for adjustability.

What at the benefits of wearing orthotics with work boots?

Due to the rigid structure of work boots and spending all day on a job site, your feet can become fatigued and strained. Your lower leg and hips may also be prone to aches and pains if your feet are not adequately supported. This is where foot orthotics come in.

Essentially, orthotics are made to support the sole, realign your feet, and provide extra shock absorption to your footwear. They are particularly beneficial if you suffer from any of the following foot problems:

Orthotic insoles can make a world of difference in reducing foot and ankle pain.

Are there different types of orthotics?

Absolutely, and they are designed to tackle different types of problems. In general, orthotic insoles are prescription devices worn with a variety of different shoes, and they can be separated into 2 types: (1) off-the-shelf orthotics and (2) custom orthotics.

Off-the-shelf orthotics are often prescribed for less complex cases where a slight adjustment of the feet will adequately improve an individual’s condition. While these inserts are more one-size-fits-all, they will do just fine to meet a patient’s treatment goals in many cases.

Conversely, custom orthotics are made to match the contours of an individual’s feet. They are made based on a three-dimensional scan of a patient’s foot and designed to meet their specific needs. While custom orthotics are more expensive, they usually have a greater lifespan and provide enhanced comfort.

Custom foot orthotics may be recommended after an initial assessment by a podiatrist.

What kinds of work boots work well with orthotic insoles?

In addition to the general features mentioned above, there are several characteristics you may have to consider if you intend on wearing orthotic insoles with your work boots.

  1. Enough depth – Your work boots should have enough depth on the inside so that when your orthotics are in place, your feet do not feel too cramped. Your toes should sit comfortably at the front with enough wiggle room, and your heel should not feel constricted. At the same time, when you wear the boots with the orthotics, they should be snug enough that they are still able to stabilize your feet and ankles.Your work boots should be deep enough to comfortably fit your orthotic insoles and feet together.
  2. A flat base – Your custom-made orthotic should be doing most of the work in realigning your foot, and a work boot with a flat base will allow it to do so. Work boots with a curved bottom may tilt your insoles in a direction such that they are no longer functioning to position your foot correctly. A flat base also allows a podiatrist to most accurately design an orthotic because it acts as a good starting point from which to build a custom insole.
  3. A deep heel – Work boots with a deep heel cup will enable orthotics to sit securely within them. They also boost stabilization by aligning the feet with the ankles, knees, and hips.
