Conversely, custom orthotics are made to match the contours of an individual’s feet. They are made based on a three-dimensional scan of a patient’s foot and designed to meet their specific needs. While custom orthotics are more expensive, they usually have a greater lifespan and provide enhanced comfort.

What kinds of work boots work well with orthotic insoles?

In addition to the general features mentioned above, there are several characteristics you may have to consider if you intend on wearing orthotic insoles with your work boots.

1. Enough depth – Your work boots should have enough depth on the inside so that when your orthotics are in place, your feet do not feel too cramped. Your toes should sit comfortably at the front with enough wiggle room, and your heel should not feel constricted. At the same time, when you wear the boots with the orthotics, they should be snug enough that they are still able to stabilize your feet and ankles.
2. A flat base – Your custom-made orthotic should be doing most of the work in realigning your foot, and a work boot with a flat base will allow it to do so. Work boots with a curved bottom may tilt your insoles in a direction such that they are no longer functioning to position your foot correctly. A flat base also allows a podiatrist to most accurately design an orthotic because it acts as a good starting point from which to build a custom insole.
3. A deep heel – Work boots with a deep heel cup will enable orthotics to sit securely within them. They also boost stabilization by aligning the feet with the ankles, knees, and hips.
